How Aprehend® Works

We treat bed bugs with Aprehend®, a biopesticide. Instead of a typical chemical spray, it uses the spores of a fungus that lives naturally in soil and infects insects. Its name is Beauveria bassiana, strain GHA. Think of spores as tiny seeds. Aprehend® is registered in Canada for bed bug control under the Pest Control Products Act (PCP Reg. No. 33745).

How Aprehend works in 4 steps: we spray thin strips, bed bugs walk across, they carry spores to their hiding spots, and infected bed bugs die within about 4 to 10 days, with a check at about 30 days

In plain terms

Bed bugs hide in cracks and seams during the day and come out at night to feed. Our technician sprays narrow strips, about 5 cm (2 inches) wide, across the routes they use: bed frames, headboards, furniture and baseboards. When a bed bug walks over a dried strip, spores cling to its body.

The bug carries those spores back to its hiding spot, where they can rub off onto other bed bugs, even ones that never touched the strip. Lab research at Penn State found this kind of bug-to-bug spread. The spores sprout and grow into the bed bug, and the label says infected bugs die within about 4 to 10 days.

So it’s not instant, and that’s part of the design: the bugs have time to bring the spores home to the rest of the group.

Where we spray, and where we don't

We follow the label directions. That means bed frames, headboards, box spring edges, sofas and chairs, and the baseboards where the floor meets the wall. The strips dry clear. We never spray mattresses, sheets, pillows or blankets.

Treatment day: wait until it's dry

People and pets stay out of treated rooms until the spray has dried. Your technician will tell you when it's okay to go back in.

First 10 days: spores at work

Seeing a few bed bugs at first is normal. Per the label, bed bugs that pick up spores die within about 4 to 10 days.

Up to 3 months: strips stay active

In cool, dry rooms the dried strips keep working for up to 3 months. Don't wipe, mop, wash, vacuum or steam them.

About 30 days: follow-up

We come back to inspect. If live bed bugs are still there, the label allows another application.

Why the follow-up visit matters

Bed bugs are experts at hiding. The label recommends an inspection about 30 days after treatment and allows Aprehend® to be applied again if live bed bugs are found. We book that visit with you from the start.

Aprehend® also works on bed bugs that resist pyrethroids, a common family of insecticides, because it works in a completely different way.

For the curious

Aprehend® contains spores (conidia) of Beauveria bassiana strain GHA suspended in oil. The spores stick to the bed bug’s outer shell, sprout and grow through it into the body. Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) reviewed the product and found the risks acceptable when it’s used according to the label. It can cause skin sensitivity, so our technicians wear protective gear when they apply it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have bed bugs?

Look for itchy bites in a line or cluster, small blood stains or dark spots on sheets and mattress seams, shed skins and a musty smell. If you’re not sure, we can inspect.

What is Aprehend®?

Aprehend® is a biopesticide for bed bugs. It’s made from the spores of a fungus found naturally in soil, Beauveria bassiana strain GHA, and it’s registered in Canada for bed bug control (PCP Reg. No. 33745). We spray it in thin strips where bed bugs travel. The bugs pick up spores as they walk across and carry them back to where they hide.

How long does Aprehend® take to work?

It isn’t instant. According to the label, bed bugs that pick up the spores die within about 4 to 10 days, so you may still see some for a little while. The dried strips can keep working for up to 3 months in cool, dry rooms. A follow-up visit about 30 days after treatment is included. We inspect, and if live bed bugs are still there, the label allows another application, which we’ll plan with you.

How much does bed bug treatment cost in Tillsonburg?

Bed bug treatment usually costs $1,000–1,500 plus HST, depending on the size of the home and how many rooms are affected. The price includes the follow-up visit at about 30 days. An inspection is required for an exact quote.

Is a follow-up visit included?

Yes. Every bed bug treatment includes a follow-up visit about 30 days after treatment, which is when the Aprehend® label recommends an inspection. We book it with you from the start.

How do I prepare for an Aprehend® treatment?

Strip and launder your bedding, pick up clutter from the floors, move furniture a little away from the walls and vacuum along the baseboards. Our printable Aprehend® prep sheet has the full before, during and after checklist.

Can I clean after treatment?

Yes, but leave the treated strips alone. Don’t wipe, mop, wash, vacuum or steam them, and don’t spray cleaners or other bug sprays on them. Cleaning removes the spores, and water stops them from working. We’ll show you where we sprayed. You can keep washing your bedding and clean the rest of the room as usual.

Can my family and pets stay home during treatment?

You don’t always need to leave the house, but people and pets should stay out of treated rooms until the spray has dried. Health Canada reviewed Aprehend® and found the risks acceptable when it’s used according to the label. Tell us before we treat if anyone in the home has a weakened immune system or allergies, or if you have pets, birds or fish tanks, and we’ll plan around them.
